Rumor has it that the Netflix series "Narcos" will wrap up after its sophomore run. That is, of course, if the streaming giant opts to stay faithful to the life of Columbian drug lord Pablo Escobar, who is the center of the crime thriller, in "Narcos" season 2.

The freshman season of "Narcos" ended with Escobar's escape from La Catedral. In real life, Escobar only lived 18 months after that prison getaway. Fans will remember that the first season already featured more than a decade of Escobar's life.

In a span of 10 episodes, the show managed to squeeze in 15 years of the kingpin's life onscreen. If they keep the same storytelling pace (and they will), it is highly likely that "Narcos" season 2 will see Escobar's downfall.

Executive producer Eric Newman has always said that he will not alter events in Escobar's life just to keep Wagner Moura, who plays the role of the kingpin, on the show.

"He will die. The design of the show is we told 15 years of history in season one," Newman said in a Netflix panel (via Slash Film).

"Trust me, if we could find a way to keep him alive and keep Wagner on the show," he bemoaned. Newman knows that it will be "disingenuous" to prolong "Narcos" beyond how it should be, adding that it was always designed to end.

He, however, knows a way to keep the show on air beyond "Narcos" season 2 despite Escobar's death. "There are any number of things that can happen after. We have not committed to one or the other. Obviously there are a lot of other stories in this world that continue on beyond him," Newman said.

It looks like "Narcos" season 2 will end Escobar's life but not the show altogether. After the drug lord's TV demise, the series can focus on the fight against other drug cartels, especially with the equally notorious Cali cartel already shown rising to power in the first season.

"Narcos" season 2 is expected to premiere in August. Production is well underway.
