Now that Pablo Escobar (Wagner Moura) is dead, the story will revolve around the new cartel that will take over the drug scene in Colombia: the Cali Cartel. New characters will also be joining in season 3 since the story will expand beyond Escobar.

In the season 2 finale of "Narcos," Escobar has been killed by a gunshot to the head, leaving his narcotics empire up for grabs by the remaining power- and money-hungry drug cartels. But the show must go on, and Netflix announced that "Narcos" season 3 is coming soon in 2017.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Eric Newman explains the Cali Cartel's role in the upcoming third season of "Narcos."

"The Cali cartel aided in the dismantling of the Medellin cartel and benefited by going from being No. 2 to No. 1," said Newman. After two years of contributing to the Medellin Cartel's demise, the Cali Cartel comes in to replace it.

"So there's a revolving-door aspect to narco kingpins and we'll certainly exploit that," added Newman.

Newman is focused on telling the story about drug cartels and narco kingpins since season 1, which will continue when the Cali Cartel reigns in Colombia on the third season of "Narcos."

But even if the Cali Cartel begins its rule over Colombia, Newman said that Escobar will not be replaced as the villain. He elaborates the differences between Escobar and the head of the Cali Cartel, Gilberto Orejuela (Damian Alcazar).

"We are going to look deeper into the systemic effects within Colombia of cocaine and corruption. Unlike Escobar, who had positioned himself as an outlaw, Cali was very much a part of the system. They had bought their way in and they enjoyed a different kind of protection than Pablo did. Pablo was protected by the people who loved him and Cali was protected by a political and economic system that they had rather ingeniously built."

The story of "Narcos" will be expanding, and new characters have been announced to join in season 3.

According to the Independent, an American woman named Christina – to be played by Kerry Bishe – who is married to someone involved in the drug cartel in Colombia will be appearing in "Narcos" season 3.

Two new and young DEA agents will also be recruited, to be played by Michael Stahl-David and Matt Whelan.

"Narcos" season 3 debuts in 2017 on Netflix.
