Will Lexington (Chris Carmack) will face some tough times ahead when the ABC series "Nashville" returns for its fourth season.

Entertainment Weekly reports that the rising country star will not find it easy to adjust to his new world after admitting about his homosexuality. Showrunner Dee Johnson said in an interview that since Will publicly came out that he is gay, he is still figuring out who he is and is supposed to become. Even his comfort zone, performing on stage, has become an alien territory for him, and he worries that his sexual preference may end up killing his career.

According to Johnson, "The first part of the season he's trying to figure out who he is in this new world order. The only place I think Will ever feels completely comfortable is on stage, and now there's a very real possibility that's not going to be his life/career anymore. It's a real struggle for him."

Last season finale, Will finally became exhausted of his double life and decided to tell his wife Layla (Aubrey Peeples) the truth. He pulled her in the bedroom and confessed everything while Layla sat frozen, unable to believe what she was hearing. Unbeknownst to them, there was a hidden camera that the producers snuck inside the room and Will's secret came out in the open.

Air Herald reports that while some view his confession as a brave act, others were worried about Will's standing on the reality show. As "Nashville" is known for its penchant for drama, it's certainly possible that it would use Will's sexuality as "a marketing fodder" to increase the rating. Will might end up isolated from other musicians who did not want to be associated with him. Even his debut album might suffer.

In season 7, it appears that the negative speculations about his career may be right. Johnson said that Will is suffering a lot, enough to even give up his career so he can stay out of the limelight and away from the public's eye. Will he be able to put his life back on track after this? And what about Layla? Will she stay at her man's side and take all the criticisms with him?

"Nashville" season 4 will premiere on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 10 p.m. EST on ABC.
