Fans of "NCIS" are still having a hard time dealing with the events that happened during the explosive season 12 finale, and the uncertainty about the show's future in season 13 is keeping them at the edge of their seats. 

At the end of the previous season, Special Agent Gibbs (Mark Harmon) was left dying in an Afghan marketplace. A young boy who earned Gibbs' trust shot him right in the chest after he broke away from his group to follow a suspicious girl. It turns out that the boy named Luke is one of the members of the terrorist group called The Calling, which is why Gibbs, Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly), and CIA Officer Joanna Teague went to the Middle Eastern country in the first place. 

Gibbs' fate remains unknown after the last episode of season 12, and Harmon's recent statements about his character sparked rumors about the end of the NCIS' leader in the series. In "The Late Late Show with James Corden," he said that it is very normal for any of the characters to leave the show, and that anyone is "replaceable," including the NCIS leader. 

However, according to series showrunner Gary Glasberg, "NCIS" season 13 will take off exactly where the 12th season ended. Glasberg told FOX News that they will wrap up the previous storyline early in the season.

"As I have done historically, I will probably get into six or seven episodes of more traditional storytelling and into the background of our characters and whatnot, and then figure out what's next and launch something significant," the series exec shared.

It was also mentioned in that interview that Gibbs' shooter Luke will return in the premiere episode of season 13, and DiNozzo will take over the lead in order to run after The Calling.

"NCIS" season 13 is slated to air on CBS on Sept. 22.
