'Need for Speed: Payback' game review: Receives mostly negative feedback from critics
A new addition to the long-running racing video game by Electronic Arts, "Need for Speed: Payback," will be released very soon. Even if the general public has not had the chance to play the game yet, other video game critics have already delivered some early reviews. The title was successful in generating a lot of hype, despite a decline in fans' interest after previous flops in the series. However, does it live up to it?
In a report by Gamespot, "Need for Speed: Payback" is not exactly a technical driving game. It is speculated that this format is a dying breed, especially since modern games have shifted their focus on making their games feel as realistic as possible. The game does provide its players with stunning visuals, however, the overall delivery of the gameplay is lacking. In fact, it is reported that the game could get a bit "mundane" at times.
One of the previous game's strong points was its emphasis on numerous options for customization, be it the engine or the exterior of any available car in the game — and "Need for Speed: Payback" has still delivered in that regard. According to IGN, the customization is still the most fun element that the game has, but there are a number of development flaws all throughout the game itself.
The open world maps have been described as "empty," and the once popular drag racing game modes have been scrapped from the game. In fact, players are not even allowed to pause during the middle of a single player race. This has resulted in a dull title that is even technically flawed. In a review by Euro Gamer, the protagonist, Tyler Morgan, was not even well-written by the developers.
These qualities are proof enough that the developers barely tried to make a game that is at the very least, passable. VG 24/7 has stated that there is very little saving grace that "Need for Speed: Payback" has, and can be summed up in one word — "senseless."
"Need for Speed: Payback" is scheduled to be released on Nov. 10, 2017 for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and the PC.
