Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, the writer and producer of the successful Marvel series "Daredevil" and the superhero team-up miniseries "The Defenders," will be in charge of the upcoming Netflix series based on "The Witcher" novels.

Hissrich will serve as the showrunner and executive producer of the new series. The appointment comes several months after Netflix announced plans to adapt the novel series for television.

The upcoming show will be based on the novel series by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. The series is comprised of eight novels as well as a number of short stories about monster hunters known as witchers, who undergo body modification and training in order to be equipped in fighting supernatural beasts. The stories center on a witcher named Geralt of Rivia.

The first short stories from "The Witcher" series were published in the mid-1980s. The first book in the novel series was published in 1993, while the latest installment in the series was released in 2013.

"The Witcher" is known around the world due to the highly acclaimed role-playing video game developed by CD Projekt RED and published by Atari. The latest video game release, "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt," was released in 2015 and has become one of the most awarded video games of all time.

Aside from the video game franchise, "The Witcher" has been adapted into comic books, tabletop games and a Polish television series in 2002. Previously, a plan to adapt the novels into a movie was being considered, but it was dropped in favor of a series adaptation.

Aside from Hissrich, Sean Daniel and Jason Brown will serve as executive producers of the series.

"The Witcher stories follow an unconventional family that comes together to fight for truth in a dangerous world," said Daniel and Brown. "The characters are original, funny and constantly surprising and we can't wait to bring them to life at Netflix, the perfect home for innovative storytelling."

"The Witcher" series has no release date yet.
