The Rt Rev Christopher Foster has been confirmed as the next Bishop of Portsmouth.

Bishop Foster will become the ninth Bishop of Portsmouth when he assumes office later in the year. He is currently Bishop of Hertford in the Diocese of St Albans.

He takes over from the Rt Rev Dr Kenneth Stevenson, who retired last autumn after 14 years in the post.

“Christians are called to be visible and approachable, with the Bishop leading that witness and service,” he said.

“My role as Bishop of Portsmouth will be to lead a church that cares for people, encourages discipleship, shares in God's mission, and stands for truth and justice.

“So I shall enjoy the great variety of the diocese and its church life as I join with lay and ordained colleagues in living the good news of Jesus Christ."

Bishop Foster is today touring the diocese, home to 142 Church of England parishes, to meet future colleagues and parishes.

Stops on the tour include St Matthew’s C of E Primary School in Blackmoor, near Petersfield, and a meeting with the vicar of St Matthew’s Church, the Rev Will Hughes, before prayers and service at Portsmouth Cathedral this afternoon.

Prayers will be said for the future bishop’s ministry in the diocese by cathedral dean, the Very Rev David Brindley.

His tour of the diocese will end with a visit to Newport Minster on the Isle of Wight, where he will meet local civic and Anglican leaders.

The date of his official installation is to be announced later in the year.
