New Deputy Secretary General of the Anglican Communion Installed

The Anglican Communion today announced the appointment of the Revd Canon Gregory K Cameron as the Council’s Deputy Secretary General.

Canon Cameron is originally from Wales, and holds degrees from the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge and Wales, and is an honourary Research Fellow of the Centre for Law and Religion in Cardiff University. In 2000 he became Chaplain to the Archbishop of Wales, before being appointed to the post of Director of Ecumenical Affairs and Studies in April 2003. He brings with him experience of ecumenism at a local and provincial level, as well as a strong interest in Canon Law.

Canon Cameron is an experienced staff member in the Anglican Communion. For the last one and a half years, he has been Director of Ecumenical Affairs and Studies at the Anglican Communion Office and Secretary of the Lambeth Commission on Communion. In addition, he was responsible for all the international ecumenical dialogues of the Anglican Consultative Council.

In making the appointment, the Revd Canon John L. Peterson, Secretary General of the Anglican Consultative Council said, “The burdens associated with the work of the Anglican Communion Office have grown enormously over recent years, and in consultation with the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Chair of the Anglican Consultative Council and my successor, the Revd Canon Kenneth Kearon, we felt together that Gregory would bring a wealth of experience and insight to the work of the Anglican Communion Office as it goes through a period of transition.”

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Rev Rowan Williams warmly welcomed Canon Cameron for undertaking the new role.

“I am sure that he will offer to Canon Kearon the whole-hearted support that he has been able to give to Canon Peterson,” Archbishop Rowan said.

The Revd Canon Kenneth Kearon, Secretary General elect, added, “I am very pleased that Gregory has agreed to undertake this role. His proven ability and wide experience will be a wonderful asset to the Anglican Communion Office and a tremendous help to me as I take up my duties. I congratulate him on his appointment and look forward to working with him in the future”
