A new project that will enable the development of whopping 11K display screens for smartphones by the year 2018 has been initiated by South Korean giant Samsung Electronics in collaboration with numerous companies, according to recent reports, including the South Korean government.

Etnews.com reports that the South Korean government is planning to invest US$26.5 million over the next five years in order to bring this new display technology closer to reality. The reports added that the project had begun since last June.

The companies involved in the project include both South Korean-based firms and international companies. The Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning or MSIP is expected to lead the project called "EnDK".

According to reports, 11K display technology provides 2250 pixels per inch resolution, which is three times higher than previous resolution. The new technology will also enable to display three-dimensional (3D) effects due to its extreme color precision.

Today's 4K resolution provides 4096 x 2160 pixels and is currently being used in televisions.

Chu Hye Yong, Executive Director of Samsung Display's Base Technology Department, recently said in regards to the technology, "We are hoping that we are able to show such technologies at Pyeongchang Olympics if there is a progress in developing technologies."

"Although some might think that 11K as 'over specification' that consumers do not need, this can work as a basis for Korean display industry take another leap if related materials and parts improve through this." Hye Yong added.

In addition to this new display technology, Samsung recently announced it has been working on another technology that will increase battery life by twofold. One of the advantages of this new technology according to Samsung is that it can enable batteries to last longer without increasing their sizes.
