"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" will not be Rian Johnson's final take on the epic space opera media franchise as he is set to film another "Star Wars" trilogy that will be different from the others. With that, the 43-year-old filmmaker now expresses his excitement over the next project.

At a press event in Mexico for the upcoming "Episode 8," Johnson talked about the new "Star Wars" trilogy he is about to make. "I'm just in the very beginning of starting to come up with what the new trilogy is going to be," he said.

Johnson will be writing and directing the new trilogy, which is said to be set outside the ongoing Skywalker saga. This movie series will be opening up a new universe that fans have never seen before.

The screenwriter continued to say that he is excited to create a new story on the "big canvas of three movies," and sees so many possibilities that he is thrilled to start. However, Lucasfilm has yet to give any further details about the new movie series and is still keeping things under wraps.

Meanwhile, there are reports that the new "Star Wars" trilogy will not tackle the Skywalker story. Also, it has been said that for the film series to keep going, it has to introduce new things and forget about the past.

In an official press release on the movie series' website, producer Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm confirmed that the new "Star Wars" trilogy will be separated from the Skywalker saga.

Here, Johnson will be introducing new characters from the "Star Wars" universe that has never explored before. "Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy," the statement reads.

"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" will hit theaters on Friday, Dec. 15, in the U.S.
