Newcastle United transfer news: Team parts ways with Jonás Gutiérrez and Ryan Taylor
Midfielder Jonás Gutiérrez and defender Ryan Taylor will no longer see action for Newcastle United after being released by the club with their contracts set to expire on June 30.
"Ryan and Jonas have both contributed significantly to Newcastle United over a number of years and on behalf of the board, I would like to place on record our sincere thanks to both players for the excellent service they have given the club," Magpies managing director Lee Charnley said according to Sky Sports.
Along with Gutiérrez and Taylor, Newcastle also released Jak Alnwick, Adam Campbell and Remie Streete.
Gutiérrez joined Newcastle in 2008 from Mallorca and after fighting through testicular cancer has been a crucial piece for the Magpies.
He anchored Newcastle to a 2-0 victory over West Ham Sunday to keep the club alive in the Premier League.
Unfortunately, the effort was not enough for the club as they decided to let go of the 31-year-old.
Gutiérrez has scored 12 goals in 205 appearances for Newcastle and expressed his dismay regarding his release through Twitter.
"Two things I learn from my illness: how you can support a player [Newcastle fans] and how you leave a player alone [Newcastle owner]," he tweeted.
"Thanks to all football fans and Newcastle fans for supporting me and [having] trust in me," Gutiérrez added.
Meanwhile, Taylor also had his own struggles dealing with major knee issues in his stint with the Magpies which he joined in 2009 from Wigan Athletic.
Despite the health woes, he was still able to score 10 goals in a total of 110 appearances for Newcastle.
"It was a great pleasure to see Ryan and Jonas come back into the team in recent weeks and compete at the highest level after the injury and illness battles they have had to overcome," Charnley said according to Sky Sports.
He added, "To come through those difficult periods with such strength and dignity will have given hope and inspiration to many and it is clear our supporters have a deep connection and affection for both players, as does everyone associated with the club."
