Nexus 10 2 or Nexus 8 could be the next Google tablet set to launch this month

The release of a new Nexus tablet is expected soon, as retailers across the U.S. slashed prices of the latest Nexus 7.

Electronics giant Best Buy slashed the price of the Nexus 7 16GB WiFi models to just $199.99. That's $30 off the regular retail price. In addition, customers will also get a Google Play gift card worth $25.

The new Nexus tablet is slated to be the Nexus 10 2, or even a slightly bigger 8-inch Nexus tablet, which is rumored to launch at the 2014 Consumers Electronics Show (CES) on January 7.

The first generation Nexus 10 stock has run dry at most retailers, and it is unlikely that customers will be rushing out to purchase the device.

The information surrounding the upcoming device has been vague, with no word from Google. Rumors ranged from LG, ASUS, to Samsung being named as the manufacturers of the next Nexus slate. ASUS manufactured the first Nexus 10 released in 2012, but LG manufactured the popular Nexus 7 2 tablet. According to SamMobile, Samsung is expected to launch its strongest rival to the iPad Air in this month, leading some to suggest that this unnamed tablet could indeed be the Nexus 10 2.

However, the new slate is expected to be quipped with the latest Android 4.4 KitKat software, HD 10-inch 2650x1600 display with gorilla glass, quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, 3GB RAM, 8 megapixel camera, and 9500mAh battery.

The Nexus 10 2 was first rumored to launch in October 2013, but Google has remained silent despite ongoing speculation.
