An on-going promotion at the Google Store slashes up to $150 from the price of the Nexus 6.

For those who would like to check out Google's Project Fi, or test the waters for a new Nexus device, a deal put up on the online store of Google places the Nexus 6 at a $150 discount as part of its grad/ dad specials.

The 32 GB Nexus 6 version is currently available directly from Google for just $499. Meanwhile, the larger capacity 64 GB has a current store price of $549. In addition, Google is pitching in free shipping, making this current promotion a sweet deal indeed.

According to observers, there might be two reasons behind Google's move of discounting its most-liked Nexus smartphone. Rumors speculate that this is to ensure continued interest in the Nexus line, as well as entice would-be Android users to purchase a Nexus 6 and experience first the newest Android platform. When the Google I/O Conference commenced this year, the tech giant unveiled the upcoming Android M, and released a preview build for the Nexus 6 together with the Nexus 5 and Nexus Player devices.

In addition, observers speculate that since the Nexus 6 is also a consistent top-rater for Nexus reviews, Google will be making sure that demand for it would also whet users' appetites for an upcoming new device – the rumored second-generation Nexus 5 smartphone. Although it is still unclear whom Google partnered with to make the new phone, the most likely manufacturers being LG and Huawei, it is already bandied about that the 2015 Nexus 5 will come before this year ends.

The Nexus 6 is a very popular smartphone, with its 5.96-inch Quad HD AMOLED display, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, Adreno GPU, and 3 GB of RAM providing users with a steady performance inside a sleek design.
