'Nightflyers' spoilers, latest news: All the latest on new George R.R. Martin Syfy series
George R. R. Martin has confirmed that another one of his iconic books is coming to the small screens. "Nightflyers" will get a TV adaptation on Syfy.
Fans of the award-winning author will not have time to miss him on TV, as he is reportedly hoping the "Nightflyers" series to air even before the last season of "Game of Thrones" premieres.
Penned in 1980, "Nightflyers" is a fictional horror novel set in Martin's Thousand World Universe. It follows the story of nine scientists who were sent to an expedition through outer space to find a mythic race of interstellar nomads. They take a spaceship called Nightflyer, one with a never-before seen captain. Soon they find themselves preys to an unseen murderer that is intent on killing them all. The novel was nominated for a Hugo Award the following year.
It was first adapted into film in 1987. Soon, it is voyaging to the small screens.
Martin announced the good news via his LiveJournal blog. The "A Song of Ice and Fire" author shared that he has read the script for the pilot episode and he was happy about the outcome.
"While it departs considerably from my novella in certain details, the essence of the story remains the same -- and I thought the teleplay was quite strong on its own terms, and a good launching point for a series," he said in the post.
Syfy first announced a "Nightflyers" reboot in May, as part of a total overhaul of the network. Martin shared that the cable channel acquired the rights to the series through the old movie deal, and he also only found out about it just last spring.
"Honestly, at first I was baffled as to how they hoped to get a series out of my story, since at the end of the novella (and the film) pretty much everyone is dead (it was a horror story, after all)," the author shared in his blog.
However, after seeing the script written by Jeff Buhler ("The Midnight Meat Train"), he thought it was a good read after all. "I came away with a better idea of where they'd find a few seasons," shared Martin.
"Nightflyers" is getting a 10-episode first season, slated to begin in July 2018.
