Nikon's newest colossal telephoto lens specs, price news: Comes with integrated teleconverter for added range

D3400 is Nikon's best entry-level DSLRNikon

Nikon unveils its first colossal telephoto lens with integrated teleconverter at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES).

The Japanese camera brand has done a lot of upgrade on its latest pro-level superzoom -- from the former 70 mm to 300 mm to the now 180 mm to 400 mm. As if that is not enough, Nikon also put in a built-in teleconverter, which gives users more shooting flexibility when flipped on.

The AF-S Nikkor 180-400mm F/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR is the first of its kind at Nikon, designed mainly for sports and wildlife photographers.

The super telephoto lens, which constantly shoots at f/4 aperture, normally covers the range of 180 mm to 400 mm. This changes when the 1.4x teleconverter is switched on, making it a 252 mm to 560 mm barrel. That is for full-frame cameras, for which the lens is original designed for.

When paired with APS-C DSLR, however, the reach will extend to a standard 270 mm to 600 mm, and 378 mm to 840 mm when the teleconverter is activated.

The teleconverter switch can easily be controlled by one finger, allowing photographers to change range without taking their eyes off the viewfinder.

While the huge frame could be intimidating, Nikon assures customers that it kept the weight and balance in check through the use of a fluorite lens element and magnesium alloy, which also helps with weather sealing.

It sports an enhanced autofocus tracking algorithm, for fast-paced subjects both in the jungle and in court. This is best paired with cameras featuring a 153-point autofocus system like the D5, D500, or D850.

"This lens is a great example of how Nikon continues to push the boundaries of innovation and what's possible with pro-level optics and high-end imaging equipment," said Kosuke Kawaura, Nikon Director of Marketing and Planning, in an official statement.

The state-of-the-art lens also comes at a colossal cost, $12,400, and is slated for release in March.
