There has been a lot of speculation as to what's next for Nina Dobrev after leaving "The Vampire Diaries" last April. Earlier this year, it was rumored that she was joining the cast of "Dancing with the Stars," while another report claimed that she was interested in joining the cast of season 3 of "True Detective."

Now, it has been confirmed that the star has joined the cast of the upcoming movie "Arrivals." According to Deadline, the coming-of-age film will also feature "Ender's Game" star Asa Butterfield and "Game of Thrones" actress Maisie Williams. The film will be directed by Peter Hutchings and will start shooting in South Africa this winter.

Dobrev will play the part of American flight attendant Izzy, who is the love interest of Butterfield's character, Calvin. Calvin is described as a hypochondriac college dropout who now works as a baggage handler at Cape Town airport. As he copes with depression, he is persuaded to join a bucket list quest by Skye (Williams). Skye and Izzy will then work together to help Calvin face his biggest fears.

On Thursday, Dobrev confirmed the news on Twitter when she responded to ET Canada co-host Rick Campanelli's tweet. "Yay to @ninadobrev on her new project 'Arrivals' w/ #asabutterfield…Filming begins in South Africa this winter. Now we know Nina…lol," Campanelli wrote.

Dobrev replied, "Lol…Yep, now you know."

Though her fans were sad to see Dobrev exit "The Vampire Diaries," the star said that she always envisioned that her character Elena Gilbert's adventures would end after the sixth season. It was reported that she left the series because she wants to pursue a movie career.

In her speech at the Teen Choice Awards last August, Dobrev said that "change is necessary" and that "everything in life comes to an end."

"As this chapter of my life comes to an end, I look back on it with a grateful heart and a big smile," she said of her journey on The CW show. "These were six incredible years I've had the pleasure of spending with all of you guys."
