The Nintendo NX has largely existed in rumors up to this point, but now Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima has provided an update regarding the progress of the new console.

In a message posted on Nintendo's website, Kimishima said that the company is "currently developing a gaming platform." Kimishima also confirmed that the new console is currently codenamed NX, although he did not reveal what it would eventually be named upon being released.

Unfortunately, that's the extent of what president Kimishima revealed about Nintendo's new console, so fans looking for more details will have to likely wait until next year to find out more about it.

Speaking of next year, some video game industry analysts have also predicted that the new console may be released in 2016.

In a roundup of predictions published by Games Industry, there was at least one video game industry analyst who said that the Nintendo NX may be released next year.

According to independent analyst Billy Pidgeon, there is a chance that the new Nintendo console may be launched in 2016, although he added that the company may be better served to hold off on releasing the platform until more games are available.

Other analysts were not as certain about the NX becoming available next year.

According to Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities, it is more likely that Nintendo will formally announce the NX next year and then proceed to make it available to consumers in 2017.

Interestingly enough, there were reports earlier this year that suggested that Nintendo was already being primed for a 2016 launch.

According to the Taiwan-based Digitimes and as reported on by The Inquisitr, the new console could be produced in large quantities as early as May of next year, although this bit of information has remained unconfirmed.

For now, fans will simply have to wait for further developments in order to find out more about the Nintendo NX.
