Nintendo Switch sales news: Over two million units sold in US

Nintendo Switch leads the gaming industry as the top-selling console for the third straight month, with a total of over two million units sold in the United States alone.

That is a lot, considering its predecessor, Wii U, only sold 6.23 million units in the United States during its entire run — from November 2012 to January 2017. The discontinued console never really got a chance to take off, despite amazing games like "Splatoon," "Mario Kart 8," "Minecraft" and more.

With new gadgets coming out in the blink of an eye, Wii U did not improve much in its four years in the market, forcing Nintendo to create a game changer.

That came in the hybrid console Nintendo Switch. When it was revealed in October 2016, critics already knew it was going to make waves. And it did. Roughly seven months since its release in March, it is now one of the best-selling consoles in the market with just under 300,000 units sold every month in North America.

A report from market research company NPD shows that as of September, Nintendo Switch is the top-selling gaming console for the third month in a row, well ahead of major competitors Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Back in June, Nintendo revealed that it had sold 4.7 million units of Switch worldwide. That makes it just 1.53 million units shy of the last generation Wii U.

Its main catch is that it allows users to play amazing games wherever they are. This includes the bestsellers "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild," "Arms," "Splatoon 2" and many others. A couple of highly-anticipated games are also coming to Switch soon such as "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" and "Super Mario Odyssey," which has received high ratings from prestigious gaming magazines.

It is also worth noting that Switch just had some major updates, which now allow gamers to transfer files as well as record and share videos to their social media.

With the holiday season arriving and kids asking their parents for a Nintendo Switch, it is not impossible for its sales to reach an all-new high.
