Nokia X release date, specs rumors: Mid-range device not meant to compete vs Apple's iPhone

HMD Global unveiled a bunch of new Nokia smartphones at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) earlier this year, including the high-end Nokia 8 Sirocco. If the latest rumors are anything to go by, the Finnish tech firm is about to launch another brand new Nokia phone this month. Known as the Nokia X, the upcoming smartphone is believed by some to be a direct competitor of Apple's iPhone X flagship, although it appears that the handset will be more of a mid-range hardware than a premium one.

The first look at the Nokia X smartphone was spotted in China, wherein a teaser photo reveals that the device will be officially announced on April 27.

The photo contains side views of two Nokia handsets that form an X. The phone itself sports curved metal edges, although the photo does not reveal much about the display features and specs under the hood.

The fact that this new Nokia smartphone is named the Nokia X can make one assume that it will be pitted against the iPhone X. However, Tech Radar pointed out that the Nokia X may not be a flagship device.

Instead, it will be more of an upper mid-range handset, while the next top-tier smartphone from HMD Global is still expected to be the Nokia 9. Leaks suggest that the Nokia X will use Snapdragon and MediaTek mobile processors, depending on the phone variant. It will receive 4GB and 6GB RAM options, with up to 64GB built-in storage.

The upcoming Nokia X is thought to be different from the original Nokia X handset launched in 2014. The first Nokia X was presented as an entry-level smartphone, while the latest one will get heavier specs and features.

More details about the Nokia X can be expected in the coming weeks as the April 27th release date inches closer. After the Nokia X, the public can expect another launch later this year with the arrival of the Nokia 9.
