For the longest time, the only means of playing high-end video games and running powerful software was to rely on desktop PCs with powerful graphic cards. However, as per a report from Digital Trends, notebook users will soon be able to experience the same amount of power with the upcoming Nvidia GeForce GTX 980MX and 970MX.

According to the report, the two graphic cards, which are designed for the mobile market such as laptop and notebook users, will be out in the market by the second quarter of the year. A summer release is not uncommon for Nvidia video cards and this release window may be just in time for new laptop models to instantly adapt.

WCCFTech notes that the 980MX is basically a version of the GeForce GTX 970 that has been stripped down and optimized for mobile use. This means it will be lighter and easier to cool in comparison to the larger unit seen in desktop units.

It clocks in at 941 MHz and its memory clock reaches 5.0 GHz, working together to reach a maximum bandwidth of 160 GB/s. Consumers will be able to choose between a chip equipped with 4 GB and 8 GB GDDR5 memory.

It is considered as the next upgrade for video game enthusiasts as the last update from Nvidia was the 2015 GeForce GTX 980M, a card designed for optimal use on a desktop but was compatible with a limited range of laptop units as well.

The GeForce GTX 970MX is regarded as a notebook-optimized version of the Nvidia GM204 core. It is noteworthy for being the first GM204 SKU designed with 1408 CUDA cores. It has the same speed as the GeForce GTX 980MX but only maximizes up to 120 GB/s bandwidth and comes in 3 GB or 6 GB GDDR5 memory.

According to the report, it is also expected that Nvidia's primary rival in the business, AMD, is expected to release their own updated graphic cards as well before the end of the year.
