OKC Thunder NBA 2015 news: Monty Williams joins with Thunder

After firing Monty Williams recently, it didn't take long for another team to pick up the youthful coach. And now he finds himself with a better team if records and performances are to be considered from previous years with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Williams was relieved several weeks ago after serving as head coach for the Pelicans. His breakthrough game this year when the Pelicans managed to squeeze into the playoffs but such seemed to be not enough.

Williams' firing caught many by surprise but many believed that the Pelicans were looking for something more, particularly with Anthony Davis in consideration.

The Pelicans hired Alvin Gentry to succeed Williams, as the Pelican look beyond what they have accomplished so far.

Gentry is currently serving as an associate coach for the Warriors and will move on to New Orleans once the NBA Finals is wrapped up.

Williams is expected to bring the same stuff he did for the Pelicans in Oklahoma. That includes playing a part in the player developmental program and giving his insights to help Donovan settle in.

Donovan has had a storied career with the Florida Gators, winning two national championships. His jump to the NBA will be closely monitored and that transition could be made easier with the hiring of Williams.

The move could also sway Kevin Durant to stay on with the Thunder next year as the former MVP heads into the free agent market next season.

Durant staying would largely depend on how his relationship with Donovan progresses but with Williams, a person whom Durant has close ties with, could play a vital factor towards Durant staying with the Thunder.

Hence, it looks like Williams' accomplishments have not gone unnoticed. Though the Thunder missed this year's NBA playoffs due to lack of manpower, his entry should help in the Thunders' quest to reclaim lost glory and perhaps even more.
