Olympic torch sets off from Durham Cathedral

The Olympic torch is making its way down from Durham to Middlesbrough today in the latest leg of the nationwide relay.

The torch set off this morning from Palace Green, part of a Unesco World Heritage Site that includes Durham Cathedral and the castle.

England and Durham cricketer Paul Collingwood was the first of 124 torchbearers to carry the torch to the next stop on its journey.

Collingwood made 68 Test and 232 limited over appearances for England and won the Ashes three times.

The torch will pass through numerous towns along the way, including Hartlepool, Darlington and Stockton-on-Tees.

The last torchbearer of the day is 17-year-old Chloe Meehan, who will light a cauldron on stage during celebrations in Middlesbrough’s Centre Square.

There will also be entertainment from the Little Comets and dance act Twist and Pulse.
