Emma (Jennifer Morrison) may not be able to bring back Hook/Killian (Colin O'Donoghue) from the Underworld in the upcoming episode of the hit ABC series "Once Upon a Time."

In "Souls of the Departed," Entertainment Weekly reports that it is possible that the star-crossed lovers will not be getting their happy ending. Co-creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis hinted about the sad ending in their interview, where a major clue was dropped regarding the pirate's fate. During the midseason finale, viewers saw Hook sacrificing himself to get rid of the darkness in him and Emma, as well as the evil souls he summoned from Hell.

When season 5 returns, it is expected that Emma and the rest of the Storybrooke characters will travel to the Underworld to save Hook. Hollywood Hills reports that people whom many thought to be dead will return to the world of the living. The town itself will transform and become Hell, as the journey to bring back Emma's one and true love begins. Unfortunately for the pair's shippers, it looks like the quest will be unsuccessful.

When asked whether bringing back Hook from Hell will mean bringing back other dead characters too, the showrunners answered in a way that was totally unexpected. They inferred that it was wrong to expect that Hook would ever get out of the Underworld, even if Emma and the gang went there to save him. Horowitz said Hook "may die harder," while Kitsis added the character "may rot there" as he's already dead.

As for Emma, Hook's fate will reportedly push her to return to her tough self. If she will not be able to bring back her love, even after sharing her heart with him, there is bound to be a backlash of emotions for Morrison's character. The co-creators said, though, the Emma is a strong woman and has been for all five seasons.

"I've got to be honest. I feel like Emma's been pretty much badass for five seasons. I don't know what season she wasn't badass. She killed Cruella [Victoria Smurfit]," Kitsis said.

"Once Upon a Time" season 5 will return on March 6, 2016 at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
