The upcoming season of the ABC series "Once Upon a Time" will feature its first LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) relationship when it returns this September.

Entertainment Weekly reports that in season 5, the fantasy series will explore one of the most controversial issues today. Executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis confirmed in an interview that they would finally do a feature about the LGBT community and that it would "reflect the world as it is now."

"It's something we want to do this year. It's something we think is due and important to do on the show. This is the world we live in. Whether that's going to be with any particular character, we're not going to say," Horowitz said.

The executive producers' refusal to name a specific character left fans wanting to know more about the said story plot. However, as it has been reported that Jamie Chung's Mulan would be returning for the upcoming installment, speculations surfaced that she would be representing the LGBT sector in the series.

Mulan has demonstrated her feelings for Aurora (Sarah Bolger) in the past, and although it was not given its due focus, the relationship drew a fan base. The Asian character is slated to appear in multiple episodes, spanning both the first and second halves of the season.

Horowitz's ambiguous answer, though, left open the possibility that they were thinking of other characters, perhaps from Camelot, aside from the Mulan and Aurora connection. What the execs did admit to TV Line was that they were inspired to add the new plot for season 5 partly due to the massive support the show has been receiving from the LGBT community.

"We know that the LGBT community has been a big supporter of the show, and we would love to be able to tell a love story that reflects that."

"Once Upon a Time" will return on Sunday, Sept. 27, at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
