OnePlus 3 release date, specs leaks: New render hints at iris scanner, massive design change?

Reports are already rife with the OnePlus 3, the China-based tech firm's purported next flagship. In fact, renders of the handset have already made their way online and they prove that the next premium smartphone out of OnePlus will not look much like its predecessors.

The leaked images aren't the most detailed and there's also the possibility that they may simply have been faked but the giveaway from these photos is that the device has a simple smooth appearance in comparison to the OnePlus 2.

The photos also hint at the absence of a fingerprint sensor, which led Tech Radar to believe that the OnePlus 3 could feature an iris scanning technology instead. But the site also hinted that the renders may be early versions of the handset's design, which means they are still subject to change.

As for the device's specs, rumor has it that it will come with a 5.5-inch display but to keep it budget-friendly as the OnePlus line is known for, media outlets do not expect the screen resolution to be more than Full HD.

It is also expected that the OnePlus 3 will be equipped with the Snapdragon 820 processor, Qualcomm's latest and most formidable. This should make the device redoubtable especially with 4GB RAM on board. The flagship may end up with 128 GB storage space as well.

Media outlets predict a big upgrade on the imaging department. OnePlus 2 had a 13-MP rear-facing shooter and a 5-MP front-facing camera. Its successor is thought to boast a 16-MP primary camera and an 8-MP selfie snapper.

The OnePlus 3 is believed to come fitted out with a 3300-mAh battery and a Type USB-C port. It will most likely have Android 6.0 Marshmallow running in the background.

The device's release date is a bit tricky to figure out as OnePlus does not have a usual release schedule to follow. OnePlus 2 was released last July while OnePlus X just launched two months ago. Pocket Lint suggests that OnePlus 3 won't show up until the latter half of 2016.
