With Apple's release of the latest OS X El Capitan, it seems like it has gained back the respect of its users who were previously dismayed by OS X Yosemite, which was released after OS X Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion.

Apple's newest operating system (OS) update is a big improvement coming from Yosemite, with noticeably better performance.

One of the first improvements that users will notice is Apple's use of Metal in many of its apps. This is important for people who love games but also works best for those who do graphics-heavy work.

Another thing to note is system integrity protection, which adds an additional layer of security to system files so that third-part apps can touch such files.

When it comes to the system, one of the first things one will see is the difference in its text. It now uses a new system font, San Francisco, designed for the Apple watch and was also used for iOS 9. Apple devices that have availed the El Capitan update will now be using this font. 

El Capitan also brings new changes to Mission Control. The tool makes searching for apps much easier, and if ever a user gets lost and can't find the cursor, just a little shake of the mouse will make the cursor bigger for a few seconds.

One may also now use split view with OS X El Capitan. It allows the opening of two full screen apps beside each other so that a user can multitask better. By simply launching Mission Control and dragging an app on top of another full screen app, the screen will be divided. Resizing the apps is done by moving the divider between the apps.

The best things about this new update are the apps. Notes, maps, and photos got the same features as the ones found in iOS 9. Notes can now be used for checklists and has a new formatting with features like embedding photos and adding links. Maps now has transit directions, originally designed for iPhone but now works well with OS X. Third-party editing tools are now allowed in Photo, making adding location or naming people made easier and photo editing much more enjoyable. 

El Capitan is now available for download from the Apple app store for free.
