Oscar Pistorius net worth shrinking under court costs

Former Olympian Oscar Pistorius' assets are dwindling and his debt is mounting, according to a recent report.

The 27-year-old is currently on trial for the killing of model and reality star Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2013. The Daily Mail reported that the cost of the trial is as high as $9,000 per day.

Before the trial, Pistorius had an estimated net worth of $5 million, and owned three houses and a vacant plot in South Africa. The properties were worth a combined 8.3 million rand, or $936,000, according to the Epoch Times.

Other assets included cars, furniture, and jewelry valued at a combined $56,000, and investments of $112,000. Pistorius also had an annual income of $631,000.

Pistorius previously valued the home he shot Steenkamp in at $936,000, but was only able to secure about $400,000 from its sale last month. One of his three lawyers, Brian Webber, said that the sale of the home was necessary to cover mounting trial costs.

In addition to attorney's fees, Pistorius must cover the cost of forensics and ballistics experts, and a crime scene reconstruction firm.

The former track athlete had been dating Steenkamp for three months when he shot her through a bathroom door at his home in Pretoria, South Africa. Pistorius maintained that he thought an intruder was in the bathroom.

On Sept. 11, Judge Thokozile Masipa found Pistorius not guilty of murder, but has not ruled on the lesser charge of culpable homicide. There is no minimum sentence for the charge in South Africa.

Pistorius also faces charges of unlawfully storing ammunition in his home, firing a gun in a restaurant in 2012, and firing a gun out of a car's sunroof in 2013. The ammunition charges carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, and the maximum penalty for each unlawful discharge allegation is five years in prison.
