'Outlander' season 3 spoilers: Claire teaches hand sanitizing and develops a 'very special' bond with someone in episode 10

The British warship suffering from a typhoid outbreak may have forcibly separated Claire (Caitriona Balfe) from her husband Jamie (Sam Heughan), but that does not stop the 20th-century doctor from helping the sick sailors.

In a new clip from the upcoming episode "Heaven and Earth," Claire continues treating the ill on board the HMS Porpoise and she actually teaches them the notion of hand sanitizing. After making rounds on the makeshift ward, she reminds the man guarding the room not to let anyone in or out without dipping their hands in grog to prevent the spread of the germs. However, that backfires immediately when her new assistant Mr. Pound (Albie Marber) starts tasting it.

"Just a taste of grog, madam," the young man says, "I couldn't see it going to waste" to which a pissed off Claire responds: "The alcohol kills contaminants which spread the fever, Mr. Pound. By dipping your hands on the grog, you clean them. But by putting them in your mouth, you foul them again."

Claire is currently stuck on the warship after their desperate captain used his right to press British subjects into service. Apologetic but resolute, the man in charge promises she will be reunited with Jamie when they reach Jamaica, which happens to be their destination too.

While she finds her kidnapping upsetting at first, Balfe's character may still eventually learn to get along with the British sailors, especially Mr. Pound. "Outlander" executive producer Matt B. Roberts teased to The Hollywood Reporter that Claire will develop a "very sweet and special" bond with her assistant.

"Claire essentially had to give up her own child to go back and be with Jamie," he shared. "And in this moment, because she hasn't quite bonded with Marsali (Lauren Lyle) yet, she does become a mother figure to Elias Pound."

"Outlander" airs Sundays at 8 p.m. EST on Starz.
