'Outlander' season 2: Jaime broken beyond saving in season 1 finale episode?

The season 1 finale of "Outlander" is just around the corner but it appears that it won't end well for Jaime (Sam Heughan). In the last episode, he was brutally tortured by Black Jack Randall — he was flogged, his hand was nailed to a table, and Black Jack literally raped Jaime's mind and body beyond repair.

Randall administered sexual torture but as a report from Zap2It points out, the scene wasn't just added for the sake of raising viewer ratings. The report says that "Outlander" is one of the few series out there that uses sex as an instrument to the story instead of just placing these scenes for the sake of having them.

It is hinted in a report by the Latin Post that breaking him out of prison is just the easy part; saving his mind will be the real task at hand. According to the official synopsis of the finale episode, "To Ransom a Man's Soul," Claire will have to "enter the darkness" with Jaime in order to bring his mind back to what it was or risk losing his sanity forever.

In an interview with TVLine, Heughan stated that going through all those dark emotions to properly portray Jaime during these torturous scenes took a heavy toll on him.

"I needed to decompress after a couple of weeks. It was pretty tense," the actor explained.

To relax, he climbed seven of Scotland's lower-lying mountains within a single day, a journey often referred to as "Munro bagging," an experience he explained was "really a nice way to clear the mind."

Fans of the books will know that the first season should end with Claire getting away, assuming that Jaime had  passed away. Season 2 would start with Claire back in her own time only to discover that Jaime survived, forcing her to return to the past and somehow reunite with her lover.

The season 1 finale of "Outlander" airs on May 30.
