Fans will meet new characters in "Outlander" season 2 and they will all shake up the lives and the relationship of Jamie and Claire as they head to France. For starters, the former's past love Annalise (to be played by French actress Margaux Chatelier) will show up upon the series' return.

Annalise's re-emergence will spark tension between Jamie and Claire, in much the same way that another character will kindle rivalry with Jamie in the game of chess. This "well-dressed, middle-aged" newcomer, Monsieur Joseph Duverney, to be given life to by French actor Marc Duret, is the minister of finance to Louis XV.

Other stars to grace "Outlander" season 2 include Rosie Day (Mary Hawkins), Robert Cavanah (Jared Fraser), Stanley Weber (Le Comte St. Germain), Dominique Pinon (healer Master Raymond) and Andrew Gower (Bonnie Prince Charlie).

"Outlander" is based on Diana Gabaldon's book series. Season 2, specifically, will be grounded upon the second volume titled "Dragonfly in Amber." However, executive producer Ronald Moore does not plan on presenting the novel page by page on the small screen.

"There will be twists and turns that aren't in the book," Moore revealed to Deadline, adding that it won't be easy bringing it to life. "The second book is more complex than the first book is. It's a little tougher challenge to adapt it."

This, according to Moore, is because "Outlander" season 2 will deal with the Jacobite Rebellion and that in the book, more historical events come into play, delving into a big political storyline. The challenge comes in Jamie and Claire's attempt to rewrite history.

The new season will take place in Paris, which Moore described as "a great setting and "was one of the most populated cities in the world at that time."

"French society, it's Aristocracy, the colors are brighter. You're talking about fine linens and silks, you're talking about gilt chandeliers, you know, everything that your mind conjures up when you say Versailles or Paris of that era," Moore said during an interview with E! Online.

"Outlander" season 2 will premiere next year. More details are expected to be revealed by Gabaldon and lead stars Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe during the San Diego Comic Con on July 11.
