Caitriona Balfe recently revealed the reason why her character Claire Randall fell in love with Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) in Starz's "Outlander" series.

The 35-year-old Irish actress chatted with PEOPLE to talk about the critically acclaimed historical-fictional sci-fi drama. According to the actress, Claire was not expecting to find love when she first arrived in 18^th-century Scotland because she was already married to Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies) during World War II.

"When Claire first meets Jamie, the initial bond of patient and nurse is something that she can relate to," the actress said.

Balfe's statements were backed up by series showrunner Ronald D. Moore, who said that love is not the top priority for Claire when she travelled back in time. "She's not here to have any kind of relationship with anybody, much less this young man. But nonetheless, there is a spark between the two of them."

But as time went by, Claire got to know more about Jamie. Each new information about the 18^th-century gentleman made him more attractive to the 20^th century nurse. "Even though he's a man of that time, there is something timeless about him and there's something modern – his willingness to change his viewpoint or learn or be open to new ideas," Balfe said.

Meanwhile, "Outlander"season 2 will take Jamie and Claire to Paris from Scotland as they try to stop the Jacobite risings by sabotaging the funds provided by King Louis XV of France to the fake prince Charles Stuart (Andrew Gower).

"The big story point picks up from where we left season 1, which is Claire and Jamie deciding to attempt to change history by stopping the Jacobite rebellion and changing history so as to prevent the slaughter on Culloden Moor and the destruction of the Highland culture after it. That's the major plot going into the season," Moore told the Entertainment Weekly.

"Outlander" season 2 is slated to return in spring 2016.
