Outlander season 4's original cliffhanger ending has been changed, says author

Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) in "Outlander" season 3.Starz

It's just a few short months until Droughtlander is over when Outlander season 4 airs on Starz and we are even more intrigued now about the ending after the author of the books behind the TV show revealed that the original ending has been scrapped.

Diana Gabaldon, who wrote the books that have inspired the hit historical TV drama, teased that show producers had revealed a 'terrific' cliffhanger ending to the upcoming season 4.

She was fully onboard with it, according to her comments to Collider, but despite her support they got back to her later to tell her that they had decided not to go ahead with that ending.

She teased that they changed the ending but that it may even be changed again as production is still ongoing.

'When I read the script for the finale, it had a terrific cliffhanger, and I wrote back and said, 'This is brilliant. They're gonna scream, but it's brilliant,'" she told Collider.

'Anyway the next rewrite came and they said not to do the cliffhanger. It may change again, you don't know.'

Her comments make us think that maybe the ending that would have made fans scream might have been some kind of heartache for Jamie and Claire. So we're hoping the new ending to Season 4 will not see the lovebirds separated or suffering any heartache.

The spoilers that have been revealed so far for Outlander season 4 suggest plenty of drama as Jamie, Claire and their daughter Brianna get caught up in the events of the American Revolution.

But there's plenty more drama to come as Digital Spy reports that Starz has recently commissioned two more seasons of the show beyond season 4 so it's likely we will have more of Jamie and Claire on our screens for at least another couple of years.

Outlander season 4 will be airing on Starz in November. An exact release date has not been announced by the network yet.
