'Overwatch' news: Upcoming map based on fan's work?

It has been almost two years since the release of "Overwatch," but its fan and player bases have been constantly growing. Some fans are so into the "Overwatch" universe that they make their own artworks and additional content. One fan, in particular, made a map based on Cairo, Egypt that can definitely work with the game, starting speculation that it might end up as a future official map.

"Overwatch" fan, player, and 3D artist Joshua Llorente made the map, and it was noticed by the game's director, Jeff Kaplan. Needless to say, it was a well-made map that Kaplan himself was impressed. "Amazing work! We'll be in touch," says Kaplan on a Reddit post where Llorente shared his own made map.

Initially, Llorente only posted art based on the map. When Kaplan gave his comment, the self-taught 3D artist then shared a video of what it is like going through the map. Fans can watch it themselves on YouTube. In fact, browsing through his YouTube channel, fans will see all the other maps that he has made.

Anyone who has played "Overwatch" would know that the design of the map itself looks great. Although there is one noticeable difference compared to the maps already in the game. Llorente's maps have a lot of passageways and narrow paths compared to official maps where people can easily meet in an area.

However, despite this minimal gameplay difference, Kaplan may just want to work with Llorente given his comment. After all, Llorente did this all by himself with several maps that Kaplan could already take. Assuming that Kaplan does keep his word and things go through smoothly, we may just see this Cairo-inspired map in the game. If not, maybe other maps by Llorente.

In other "Overwatch" news, the "Overwatch League" (OWL) will be starting on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018. There will be three games played each day until Saturday, Jan 13, 2018.
