Oxfam recreates UK's first charity shop

Fans of vintage fashion will have the chance to shop down memory lane at the Vintage at Goodwood festival this weekend – in a complete recreation of Oxfam’s original 1948 shop.

The incredible replica shop will be on the festival’s Vintage High Street and will be packed to the rafters with five decades of fine vintage clothing, accessories and homewares, all handpicked from Oxfam shops across the country. Oxfam’s expert team of volunteers will also be on hand to style and advise on creating an authentic look.

The 1948 shop was the first ever UK charity shop and is still going strong over 60 years later on Broad Street, Oxford. The shop proved such a successful concept that Oxfam now has more than 700 shops across the country, several dedicated fashion boutiques and the UK’s first online charity shop.

Vintage devotees can also see fashion brought to life in Oxfam’s specially choreographed catwalk show ‘Thoroughly Modern Vintage’. The event will showcase the best of Oxfam’s collection – presenting vintage style for modern times. And those that are inspired by the runway experience can snap up pieces from the show in the Oxfam shop afterwards. The catwalk show takes place at 1.30pm on Saturday.

Sarah Farquhar, Oxfam’s head of retail, says: “Every element of iconic fashion, design and music has passed through Oxfam’s doors over the last six decades. The beauty of vintage clothing is that it can be recycled and reused again and again, with a treasured item donated by one person offering endless possibilities for someone else."

As a well-known face of vintage fashion for over 60 years, Oxfam has been chosen as the charity partner for the new Vintage at Goodwood festival this August and will be with festival-goers for every step of their vintage journey. Vintage at Goodwood is the brainchild of designers Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway and Lord March and takes place from 13 - 15 August 2010. This year’s festival is the first of what will be an annual music and fashion led celebration of creative British cool.

Wayne Hemingway says: “Oxfam is the original go-to for vintage style. Like many designers second shops have always been a source of inspiration. In fact my first business was selling second hand clothes on Camden Market back in 1981. Vintage at Goodwood will be supporting Oxfam this year and encouraging visitors to support the charity’s causes. Not only are we celebrating British cool but we also want to celebrate how good the British public is at giving back.”
