Oxfordshire churches gear up for Ecoweek

Faringdon and surrounding villages in Oxfordshire are taking part in Ecoweek this Saturday to help local people reduce their impact on the environment.

Homes, schools, farms and churches are all onboard to show people how they can lead more sustainable lifestyles. Ecowind, the week's finale takes place at Westmill wind farm on 21 June where the World Record for the largest number of people hugging a wind turbine will be set.

Sjoerd Vogt, mastermind behind Ecoweek explains what it is all about: "We all need a bit of help and encouragement when it comes to living greener lifestyles and reducing our ecological footprint.

"Ecoweek is about community - learning from neighbours and friends and finding out how we can all make a difference. If we can have some low carbon fun along the way, then so much the better. "

Wiltshire-based Good Energy, leading provider of climate change solutions, is supporting Ecoweek and helping to host the Ecowind finale.

"Today, the world is at a crossroads," says Juliet Davenport, Good Energy's Chief Executive. "We have high fuel prices, high food prices and our rising carbon emissions might end up costing us the earth.

"At Ecowind we have a host of exhibitors and family friendly activities that are all about low carbon living, that can help us break free from a high carbon economy and get us focused on leading richer, greener lives."

Westmill, the South of England's first community wind farm was commissioned earlier this year and is opening to the public for the first time for Ecoweek.

"At Ecowind we are expecting over 2,000 visitors and we want them to help us set the record for the world's biggest turbine hug," stated Adam Twine, member of the Westmill Wind Farm cooperative.

"Westmill is a beacon of hope for positive change and people power," he added.
