The upcoming sci-fi film revolves around two passengers aboard a space ship who wake up to find themselves suddenly tasked with saving mankind. Meanwhile, director Morten Tyldum reveals that Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt met for the first time while filming "Passengers."

"Passengers" features Jennifer Lawrence as Aurora and Chris Pratt as Jim, two passengers aboard a space ship on its journey to find a new and inhabitable world. But the two passengers find themselves the only ones awake and still 90 years away from their intended destination.

According to the synopsis released by Sony, "The trip takes a deadly turn when their hibernation pods mysteriously wake them 90 years before they reach their destination. As Jim and Aurora try to unravel the mystery behind the malfunction, they begin to fall for each other, unable to deny their intense attraction... only to be threatened by the imminent collapse of the ship and the discovery of the truth behind why they woke up."

The film is directed by Oscar-nominated "The Imitation Game" and "Headhunters" director Morten Tyldum, while the script was written by "Prometheus" and "The Darkest Hour" screenwriter Jon Spaihts, who created the script for the film years ago.

At Deadline's The Contenders event last Nov. 5, Tyldum shared that he was drawn to the film because it was a project with an intimate tone that required a delicate balancing act.

"Because it's a character-driven film, they have to go through extreme choices. It's really a roller coaster emotionally," Tyldum added.

There were several Hollywood actors tagged when the film was still in development. When Sony finalized Lawrence and Pratt as the actors for the project, Tyldum shared that the two didn't know each other before filming began. Tyldum also shared that while he had to meet the two actors separately, he felt that Lawrence and Pratt "will allow themselves to connect and fall in love with each other at some level."

"Passengers" debuts on theaters in Dec. 21.
