'Persona 5' release date: Introducing Phantom

The as of now known cast of characters for "Persona 5" appears to present a more mature lean for the franchise as it gets ready for the release of its fifth mothership title.

In previous games, and most recently in "Persona 4," the franchise has used high school students as its main characters and generally stayed within that high school setting throughout the length of the game.

In "Persona 5," the franchise taps into the high school setting yet again, but it also appears to be putting less emphasis on that familiar setting, at least due in part to the backgrounds of the main characters.

Phantom, the main character, fancies using knives and pistols while wearing a bird mask. Even though he too is a high school student, he appears to be more interested in his side hobby, which in "Persona 5" looks to be burglary.

Joining Phantom are two more classmates/crime partners in Ryuji Sakamoto and Anne Takamaki. Sakamoto is the muscle of the group, as he prefers using blunt weapons along with his shotguns to carry out his missions together with his classmates all while he has his signature skull mask on. On the other hand, Takamaki utilizes a more unique weapon set by pairing whips and machine guns to commit robberies and is known for her trademark cat masks, according to Latino Post.

Previous incarnations of the "Persona" franchise had portrayed the main characters as strictly law abiding citizens, so the added wrinkle could certainly offer more varied gameplay for fans in the latest title.

As of now, game developer Atlus Co., Ltd. has confirmed that "Persona 5" is still expected to be released in 2015, although no exact date has been pinpointed, according to Polygon.

Rumors online are placing the possible release window at around December, although nothing is set in stone.

"Persona 5" will also be available for both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 upon release.
