While more fans continue to enjoy numerous releases from Sony's current flagship console, some are asking if the company will be taking stock of Nintendo's upcoming NX console and come out with a new, next-gen PlayStation system.

According to speculations, since there are no official announcements yet from Sony, and as the PlayStation 4 still manages to have a huge following in terms of users and titles library, Sony would most likely just release an upgraded version of its current-gen console. In a report, Vine Report concluded that an upgraded PS4 may be next in line for Sony since rival Microsoft also has set its sights on an upgraded Xbox One. For the Xbox One for instance, there is already talk of backwards compatibility and Windows 10 support. Sony might opt to update its PS4 to coincide with the new features that the Microsoft console will integrate.

Both consoles already enjoy continuous firmware updates, as well as storage upgrades.

Meanwhile, with the advent of VR and augmented reality gaming, some fans might be keen on Sony laying out its plans for the next-gen PlayStation. While Microsoft still has no details (or leaked speculations) for an upgrade for an Xbox, another rival is already making headway into the next-gen console wars. It has already been confirmed that Nintendo is hard at work on its NX system, said to be a hybrid home console and mobile gaming platform.

However, some observers are saying that if the release of the next Sony console would be based on its timeline, then fans are looking at a very far future for the PS5. According to The Monitor Daily, it might be in 2019-2020 that players will see the next Sony console, and optimistic reports place the PS5 becoming available in 2018 at the earliest.
