Although Sony had been trying to update further its current-gen console, the PlayStation 4, with new features such as virtual reality gaming support, many fans and observers are keeping their eyes peeled for the next PlayStation console.

A number of speculations are currently floating online about the PS5, and chief among the rumors is that Sony will be ditching the gaming disc system for its next console.

According to N4BB, with the way that the gaming industry is going such as streaming games becoming more mainstream, Sony may well release a PlayStation 5 that is pure streaming device.

The industry follower mentioned that although this move may be seen as drastic, current conditions in the gaming industry spell out the possibility of Sony releasing its next-gen console without a CD drive. Downloading games and streaming from Steam and other services seem much cheaper compared to buying a physical disc. Meanwhile, another advantage of having no CD drive in the console is that there will be room for other components, such as the PS5 having a huge amount of storage (which would also be a plus for game title digital downloads).

However, the industry follower mentioned that the rumors remain hearsay since Sony has not yet confirmed any details about the PS5 and the next-gen console is speculated to be too far in the future.

According to Realty Today, fans of the PlayStation consoles may likely see the PS5 in 2018 at the earliest.

Meanwhile, the industry follower also stated that although the release date for the next-gen console will not happen in at least two years' time, Sony has been steadily developing components for the next-gen system. Apparently, the PS5 will carry a next-gen Accelerated Processor Unit (APU) developed by AMD, and that the component will have five times the generating capacity of current-gen versions.
