Premier hones in on radical debate between Muslims and Christians

"There is a place where Christians and Muslims are at war." Those are the opening words of a new documentary broadcast on Premier Christian Radio.

Up The Ladder in Hyde Park, presented by Premier's Justin Brierley, follows Jay Smith and the Hyde Park Christian Fellowship as they argue openly and passionately with radical Muslims at Speaker's Corner every Sunday.

"I expect to be hated, I expect to be persecuted, I expect for Muslims to kill me some day, I've had many death threats," Smith tells Brierley.

During the thirteen years he and his team have been debating with Muslims over faith, there has only been one physical altercation and it led to a change in how debates take place at Speaker's Corner.

"Spring of '95 I was confronting one of the Muslim speakers down there [at Speakers Corner] and I got attacked," he told Premier. "I was knocked unconscious, surrounded by sixty Muslims. There was only one other Christian with me.

"That was in the newspaper. The police came to me - concerned. They couldn't see me in the crowd. They said if you're going to do this again, you've got to get up on a ladder so we can see you.

"I didn't have a very loud voice back then, I was shy and unassuming. Because of what had happened, I said let's try. I got up on the ladder and started these confrontations from the ladder.

"I found immediately I had a lot more authority on a ladder and I could control the crowd better. It's 2008, it's gone 13 years. A lot more people are doing it now."

While Smith is a well-known figure amongst the Muslims who attend the weekly interfaith debates, his team are very careful about sharing personal information with the Muslims they interact with, for reasons of personal security. The Hyde Park Christian Fellowship even asks that the location of their pre-debate meeting house is kept a secret.

Through the course of Up The Ladder in Hyde Park Brierley attends a debate between the Hyde Park Christian Fellowship and a variety of Muslim leaders. The atmosphere is charged as both parties climb their ladders.

"George Bush, a self-confessing born again Christian. All these Christians clapping, they are born again Christians. Their brother, George Bush, prays to God, but George Bush has already killed a million Iraqis," one of the Muslim speakers tells the crowd and the debate begins.
