Project Morpheus release date update: date listed for Q2 2016

Sony

During their presentation at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2015, Sony spent no more than two minutes showcasing their upcoming VR accessory for the PS4, the Project Morpheus device, and did not reveal its retail price or expected release date. However, both details have been leaked online via an Australian retail website, as cited by a report from HardcoreGamer.

According to the report, the VR accessory is currently slated for release in the second quarter of 2016. The item is no longer live on the site but it has been live long enough for people to screen shot the listing and speculate whether this is an accurate release window or just a place-holder for their inventory.

If the release window is true, then this means the device will hit store shelves anywhere between April and June 2016. It is speculated that the company may be waiting to take advantage of spring break sales or other price drops in order to put more emphasis on their new device.

The accessory is also listed for £399 which converts to $445-$450, depending on currency exchange rates. A post from VineReport points out that this is a peculiar price range for Project Morpheus because this means the device would be more expensive that the PS4, the console it will serve as an accessory for. The PS4's retail price is at $399.

At the time of writing, Sony has not yet confirmed or denied the listing but the company has previously stated during their presentation back in 2014 that the device will be ready soon. Many fans speculated that it might be available by the end of 2015 but this new leak sheds some light on Sony's supposed real plans for the device.

Several games have already been revealed to show support for the VR device such as "ARK: Survival Evolved," "GNOG," and "Project CARS." Sony might be waiting a little while so that other AAA titles, particularly PS4 exclusives, may be integrated with the Project Morpheus as well.
