The list of free games for PlayStation Plus subscribers this October has been updated, and one of the games that PlayStation 4 owners can get for free is the HD remaster of "Resident Evil," just in time for the Halloween season and a few months prior to the release of "Resident Evil VII: Biohazard."

As stated by the official PlayStation blog, PlayStation Plus members can now download "Resident Evil HD" for the PlayStation 4. This version is based on the GameCube remake that initially launched in 2002 and not the PlayStation One original back in 1996.

While the game still uses 3D models superimposed on pre-rendered backgrounds, everything has been remade from the ground up. The PS4 version takes this remake one step further by including wide-screen support, allowing the camera to pan in order to properly function on 1080p resolution settings.

Control schemes have also been altered, allowing the character to move according to the direction pressed on the Dual Shock 4 controller. However, there is still the option to play the game using the original tank controls used in the PS One original.

All of the live-action cutscenes from the PS One version have also been removed and replaced with cutscenes using the in-game engine. Much of the script has also been remade to be more serious and true to the horror-themes the game uses while still retaining some of the camps that the original was known for.

The timing of the release for PS Plus is noted by fans to be perfect for the Halloween season, but it is also several months away from the launch of "Resident Evil VII: Biohazard," the newest game in the series which sees a major shift in gameplay and presentation.

The seventh main title will be played in a first-person perspective, and it will also integrate VR compatibility. Only a few of the original characters from the franchise are coming back for the new game.
