Last year drew to a close with a surprise from Sony. Apparently, hardcore fans of classic PlayStation 2 titles can now enjoy them on the current-gen PlayStation 4. However, instead of the being like the backwards compatibility feature of Sony's fiercest console rival, Microsoft's Xbox One, the PS2 to PS4 compatibility has something to do with a direct port of classic videogame titles.

This means that instead of PS2 discs being playable on the PS4, Sony talked publishers into re-releasing their major titles, with the classic games being ported directly for the current-gen console.

Basically, classic PS2 games will get a make-over -– although the story, gameplay, mechanics and interface will stay the same, each classic title will have better framerates, over-all graphics improvements, and will also get to enjoy Trophy support, according to Games Radar.

Meanwhile, there are already confirmed PS2 titles that will make the jump from being a classic to a listed PS4 title. According to GameSpot, the latest addition to the PS2 to PS4 library is "FantaVision," considered a classic because it was a launch title for the PS2.

The industry follower added that with the addition of the new titles, the PS2 to PS4 program now has 10 confirmed titles, and that the library is rumored to add more soon.

This was also mentioned by PlayStation Lifestyle, saying that potential PS2 classics that might make it as PS4 titles include "Ape Escape 3," Okage: Shadow King," "Primal," "Siren," and "Wild Arms 3." Apparently, the PS2 titles have already been rated by ESRB for the PlayStation 4.

It is also rumored that aside from the newly rated titles, other PS2 classics like "Ape Escape 2," "Dark Cloud 2," and "Max Payne" might also be released for the PS4 in the future.

The PS2 to PS4 program was launched last month with eight titles to start.
