There's lots of buzz building up for the PS5 release date after the Russian PlayStation account posted a tantalizing tweet suggesting a big announcement coming soon.

According to Gamingbolt, the Russian PlayStation account tweeted out an image of a console alongside the letter X and the caption 'Please stand by.'

The Express is interpreting this as a possible PS5 reveal although another idea is that it may relate to backwards compatibility for PSOne games.

Per Sony, a PS5 is definitely on the cards but they haven't really revealed much more about when it will see the light of day.

But it did seem from comments made earlier this year by Sony Interactive Entertainment's CEO Tsuyoshi Kodera to the Wall Street Journal that Sony wasn't planning a release any time soon.

In fact, it's at least three years off as the company works out its next move, but even then we're talking about three years at the earliest. His comments might mean they don't actually get things moving with the console until 2021. That's a very long wait.

'We will use the next three years to prepare the next step, to crouch down so that we can jump higher in the future,' Kodera said.

'We need to depart from the traditional way of looking at the console life cycle. We're no longer in a time when you can think just about the console or just about the network like they're two different things.'

So that's a few more years yet of guessing what Sony will do with the PS5 as it tries to break with tradition.

USGamer recently reported that Starfield might be released to the PS5. The game was announced by Bethesda during the E3 2018 conference last month and at the time, Bethesda's Todd Howard said they were making the new title for 'next-gen.'  Will that next-gen include a new PS5?
