"Quantico" season 2 returns in January next year with Alex (Priyanka Chopra) going rogue. Meanwhile, the series' showrunner talks about how season 2 of "Quantico" is relevant to current events in the U.S.

Previously in "Quantico" season 2, it was revealed that Jake (Jake McLaughlin) and Nimah (Yasmine Al Massri) are members of the Citizens' Liberation Front (CLF) who are trying to terrorize New York City.

As seen from the episode 9 promo announcing that the show will return on Monday, Jan. 23 next year, Alex suspects that maybe the CLF aren't the bad guys and that she will go rogue once she returns to The Farm.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Josh Safran shares that Ryan being part of the terrorists indicates that the line between good and bad is not as clear as it's supposed to be. Safran explained that Quantico was inspired from situations with gray areas and dives into a story of "rectifying the sides of yourself" when you unexpectedly find the good in people who you thought were bad, and see the bad in people you thought were good.

"The Citizens' Liberation Front might look like terrorists and are committing acts of terrorism, but that doesn't mean that people who commit acts of terrorism don't have their reasons," added Safran.

This indicates that maybe Ryan, Nimah, and Miranda (Aunjanue Ellis) are with the CLF for a very good reason.

Meanwhile, Safran shared the important message that the show is trying to get across to viewers in the U.S.

"We will learn more about what it means and what this civil war in the country really is and who these people are fighting and why they think it's going to accomplish anything," Safran said.

Safran elaborated that the terrorist plot was always meant to be done halfway through season 2, but the story will develop into something that imitates the current state of the world.

"It's about people who do not want the world to be as dark as the world is and how they can help that. As opposed to just portraying the world as it is, it's portraying the people to help the world not be what it is," concluded Safran.

"Quantico" season 2 returns on Monday, January 23, 2017 on ABC.
