Real Madrid captain and defender Sergio Ramos recently signed a five-year extension with the club and in a press conference, said he never desired to leave and it was not all about the money. 

In recent months, Manchester United were never shy of expressing their interest in Ramos, already having contract talks with Real Madrid and a £28.6m bid, according to BBC Sports. 

Meanwhile, Real was interested in United goalkeeper David de Gea. There were talks about a possible trade deal involving the two but nothing materialized. 

Now, there is no doubt Ramos will be staying at Bernabéu, following the signing of his new contract. 

"I know this renewal has taken a while but my heart and head have always been with Real Madrid so I couldn't be happier," Ramos said in the announcement of his new deal. 

Ramos also stated that he never spoke about his extension and respected what the press people want to say, but that "the reality is a bit different."

The 29-year-old defender added that he never wanted to leave and would want to retire at Real Madrid. 

"I'm being honest I never said I wanted to leave, I was quiet. I never said anything out of respect for my team-mates and the president, I never rang the office to ask for more money. I'm just very happy that I have renewed and I want to stay here for the rest of my career," Ramos stated. 

He also denied reports that the prolonged signing of his contract was because of money. 

Ramos said that he could have gone to another place and earn more money but still decided to stay with Real Madrid. 

"It wasn't a question of money. There were personal and professional things that I needed to organise and that is all sorted," he added. 

Ramos admitted he was unhappy with certain things before, but he spoke to the right people about it; hence, everything has been cleared now and he is very happy to be with Real Madrid.
