For a few fleeting hours, "Red Dead Redemption" was available to download for the Xbox One as a backward compatible title, but now the game is unavailable yet again.

For those who may have been unaware, the popular western-style role-playing game (RPG) briefly became available over the weekend to the delight of fans, but that was, apparently, not supposed to happen.

In a post on Reddit, Xbox Live Director of Programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb said that "Red Dead Redemption" being made available for the Xbox One was the result of an "error."

Hryb elaborated that Microsoft was in the middle of testing a variety of Xbox 360 titles when access to those games were mistakenly made available. He also announced that Microsoft has since removed access to those titles.

Interestingly enough, Hryb did indicate that Microsoft would have more information regarding new releases soon. So while "Red Dead Redemption" may be unavailable as a backward compatible title right now, that doesn't mean the game may not eventually be made accessible later on.

For now, players who did manage to download "Red Dead Redemption" while it was briefly available have said that the game is no longer playable online, although it has remained accessible offline, GameSpot reported.

Some players who managed to download the game have also revealed that it runs well on the Xbox One, so that may be an indicator that "Red Dead Redemption" could already be ready to go and Microsoft may just be working out a few things before they can officially release it as a backward compatible title.

Aside from "Red Dead Redemption," other games that were seemingly made available by accident include "Tekken Tag Tournament 2," "Left 4 Dead 2," "Halo Wars," "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night," and "Alan Wake's American Nightmare," NDTV reported.

As of now, fans can only hope that "Red Dead Redemption's" accidental availability on the Xbox One will soon be made intentional and official in the near future.
