Fans will be treated with more shocks and surprises when "Reign" season 3 returns January next year. This is what the set of new promotional images from the second episode of the series for 2016 titled "Wedlock" definitely suggested.

Almost all of the photos showed the characters in a great deal of distress and apprehension with Mary herself wearing an expression that makes it look like she has been told some bad news that she can't do anything about.

In one of the photos, Gideon was pictured confronting Mary, who wore the same aforementioned melancholic face. On the other hand, a couple of the photos from the "Reign" season 3 episode showed an enraged Elizabeth, with her eyes piercing.

The synopsis for the episode teases that when the hit historical drama goes back on air, Mary and Elizabeth will be in calamitous situations with both fighting to avoid the potential disasters they could meet head on.

Spain prince Don Carlos still invites the suspicion of some, including Mary's. In order to learn what is really going on with the Spanish royalty, Mary enlists the help of Gideon, who may not be the most enthusiastic person about the new task, based on the promo photos.

Elizabeth's own type of disaster in "Reign" season 3 comes in the form of her on the verge of losing her grip on England. In order to be able to keep her power, she seeks the assistance of Robert Dudley. This will force him to make a decision that could break his heart either way.

Rumor has it that Elizabeth will ask Robert to divorce his wife Amy so he can marry her. This should allow her to keep her supremacy. However, it is also being said that Elizabeth will order him to kill his own wife to get the job done.

This makes sense bearing in mind the fact that "Reign" season 3 follows events of the past religiously. History says that Amy died when she was 28 after falling down the stairs and snapping her neck. It is speculated that this is no accident and that her husband may have something to do with it.

When the new season comes, Claude will also be in a bit of a quandary herself after Narcisse decides to choose for her the man she will marry. "Reign" season 3 returns on Jan. 8 on The CW.
