Previously, it was said that the upcoming season for "Rick and Morty" will premiere before the year ends. However, speculations suggested that there may be a slight delay in the release, prompting an early 2017 debut for season 3 instead.

Supposedly, although production for "Rick and Morty" season 3 is going smoothly, there may be censorship in some of the scenes for the upcoming show. It is suggested that some of the changes in the story and design for the third season have been put up to be within the requirements set by Broadcast Standards and Practices for its network. Supposedly, some of the changes will make season 3 visually acceptable, such as changing the brain matter's color from pink to green, and tweaking some more gory details from the show. The creative team is also said to be making workarounds for some of the more sensitive areas of the season — an example is in one episode where Rick supposedly buys a sex robot for Morty.

Previously, co-creator Dan Harmon said that they are targeting a release for "Rick and Morty" season 3 before the end of the year.

Meanwhile, should the show get a delayed premiere, speculations suggested that "Rick and Morty" season 3 will premiere in March next year. It has already been teased in the show itself. In season 2 of the series, Mr. Poopybutthole, one of the characters in the show, claimed that the show will "not return for another year and a half." In addition, show writer Dan Guterman has revealed that he has just finished the script for season 3. Although production is still ongoing, the creative will have to put up all the episodes for the season before releasing it, making a December 2016 release almost unlikely.

"Rick and Morty" season 3 will air on Adult Swim on the Cartoon Network.
