"Rick and Morty" season 3 will premiere sometime this year, but given how no official date has yet been stated, it is widely speculated that the show won't be airing until December, right before the holidays. One thing is clear, however, and that is fans will see Beth and Jerry get a divorce once season 3 is underway.

Series co-creator Dan Harmon explained in the season 2 DVD commentary (via Geek.com) that the writers initially thought of keeping Beth and Jerry fighting and threatening to have a divorce as a running gag in the show. However, Harmon explained this joke had started to run thin.

"I thought that Jerry and Beth getting a divorce would be like Kenny being killed in 'South Park,' like, when we first conceived the show that it would never run out of shelf life that that was the kind of joke of like, oh all our parents were about to get a divorce," he stated. "But, I think Millennial viewers are like, 'I don't understand, why don't they just recycle more?' So, season three we kind of move the Beth story forward," Harmon went on to say.

It is unlikely that the divorce would take place immediately in the premiere episode, given that season 3 will still need to deal with rescuing Rick from prison. Fans speculate that this divorce may take place sometime in the middle of the season, and Beth and Jerry are unlikely to get together again for the rest of the show.

Harmon also explained that they did have plans for Beth past this divorce, indicating that while Jerry will remain the way he is with his children or maybe even move out, Beth may be finding love with someone else.

"Rick and Morty" season 3 will premiere by the end of the year, although the lack of an announcement has fans speculating that it may be delayed until early 2017.
